All holders of Biodiversity Stewardship Agreements (BSA) on land in New South Wales (NSW), require to undertake Monitoring as part of their Biodiversity Stewardship Site (BSS) BSA.
The monitoring requirements are usually covered in section 7 of the Management Plan for your BSA Site. These monitoring requirements are time consuming and onerous. They require detailed botanical and abiotic data collection. This is necessary to understand the improvements in biodiversity of the site, over time.
Ecological Monitoring is typically required within the first 1-2 years of registering your BSA.
You will be required to engage an Ecologist to visit site and establish permanent 'plots' which are then surveyed of vegetation and flora, and often soils, and vertebrate pest activity.
Monitoring typically occurs at 5 year intervals, for example, a BSA that was established in 2021 will require a monitoring round in 2026.
The Ecologist who delivers the monitoring must be suitability qualified and undertake the monitoring in accordance with the Biodiversity Conservation Trust Ecological Monitoring Module (EMM)
This monitoring is a legal requirement of your Biodiversity Stewardship Agreement.
The monitoring methods and data is overseen by the NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust (BCT) but it must be undertaken by an independent suitably qualified person, such as the Ecologists at Land Eco Consulting.
Land Eco have extensive experience undertaking monitoring of BSA Sites to meet the requirements of the EMM and BCT.
