Green Star Building - Nature & Biodiversity

In 2020, the Green Building Council of Australia launched the new Green Star Buildings rating system.

This was the biggest overhaul of the Green Star rating system in over 18 years.

 Green Star Buildings has been embraced by industry with over 400 new buildings registering.

There is immense value in obtaining Green Star rating for your next project.

One of the requirements of Green Star is that the proponent avoids land clearing or damage to:

1. Old Growth Forest
2. Any wetland listed as 'High National Importance'
3. Any 'Matters of National Environmental Significance' under the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999, irrespective of whether the project requires a referral to the Commonwealth Environmental Minister or is a 'Controlled Action' (or not)

These requirements are stringent and difficult to avoid unless you obtain the correct advice from an Ecologist prior to purchase of, or placing an option upon, the land you wish to develop.

Even after you purchase or place an option to purchase land, there still may be opportunities to ensure your development can avoid the above three nature/biodiversity constraints to ensure you can achieve the Green Star rating you desire.
